Mangroves – under protection and important source of fuel wood at the same time.

Mangroves are trees that grow in saline coastal sediment habitats in the tropics and subtropics. They protect the land against erosion but at the same time are an important source of fuel wood for the local population. Due to a depletion in common fuel wood the local population cuts down mangroves as a substitute. The district tries to solve this problem by finding alternative fuel sources and by giving away seedlings for reforestation. Additionally, the white and red mangroves that are common in the district are protected by the Wildlife Division.

You can have a look at these special species on a boat tour along the islands or the estuary.
